Do people actually pay for the AI they use most? I spent some time with a16z's three AI Top 50 lists for August 2026: most used on mobile, most visited on the web, and highest consumer spending. Side by side, they tell two different stories.

**The short answer: mostly not.** 29 of the 50 consumer AI apps with the highest spending are not in the top 50 for mobile users or for web visits. Only seven apps are on all three lists: ChatGPT, Claude, Canva, Notion, Perplexity, Suno and Photoroom.

Below are the questions people ask about these lists, each answered from the lists themselves. My own opinion is labelled as my read.

## Which AI tools do people use most in 2026?

ChatGPT is number one on both usage lists, for mobile users and for web visits. After that, the two lists differ.

| Rank | Mobile apps, by monthly active users | Web products, by monthly visits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ChatGPT | ChatGPT |
| 2 | CapCut | Gemini |
| 3 | Gemini | Claude |
| 4 | Canva | Canva |
| 5 | AI Gallery | DeepSeek |
| 6 | Copilot | Grok |
| 7 | Doubao | Notion |
| 8 | Picsart | character.ai |
| 9 | Dola | Gemini Notebook |
| 10 | Microsoft Edge | Doubao |

Names are as a16z labels them. Mobile ranks are from Sensor Tower and web ranks from Similarweb, both for August 2026.

## Which AI tools do people actually pay for?

On a16z's spending list, the top ten are OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), Canva, Superhuman, Higgsfield, Replit, Suno, Lovable, Perplexity and ElevenLabs.

Further down, the list is full of tools that make something: Midjourney (11), Otter.ai (14), HeyGen (23), Runway (25) and Gamma (30), along with Descript, Synthesia, Speechify and Fireflies.ai.

Two things to know before you read too much into it:

- **It measures U.S. consumer spending.** The chart is titled "monthly revenue", but a16z says the data is observed spending on U.S. consumer cards from YipitData. It is U.S.-only, drawn from panels rather than a census, and "should not be read as total company revenue".
- **Gemini is left out on purpose.** The chart's note says its revenue could not be reliably separated from Google's broader consumer revenue.

## Which AI apps are both popular and top-earning?

Seven apps are on all three lists. ChatGPT is first on each.

| App | Spending rank | Mobile rank | Web rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (OpenAI) | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Claude (Anthropic) | 2 | 12 | 3 |
| Canva | 3 | 4 | 4 |
| Suno | 7 | 47 | 19 |
| Perplexity | 9 | 25 | 12 |
| Notion | 17 | 28 | 7 |
| Photoroom | 38 | 45 | 36 |

The overlap is much bigger on the web than on mobile. 20 of the 50 highest-spending apps are also in the web top 50. Only 8 are in the mobile top 50: the seven above plus FaceApp. Put the other way, 42 of the top 50 mobile AI apps are not on the spending list.

## Which popular AI apps are not on the spending list?

DeepSeek, Doubao, Qwen, Kimi and Meta AI rank high on usage and are not on the spending list.

| App | Mobile rank | Web rank | Spending rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| DeepSeek | 14 | 5 | not in top 50 |
| Doubao | 7 | 10 | not in top 50 |
| Kimi | not in top 50 | 21 | not in top 50 |
| Qwen | 46 | 24 | not in top 50 |
| Meta AI | 18 | 31 | not in top 50 |

This does not mean these apps earn nothing. The spending list only sees U.S. consumer card spending, so an app used mostly outside the U.S., or one that does not charge consumers, will not show up there.

It also works the other way round. Higgsfield is number 5 on spending, number 28 on web visits, and not in the mobile top 50.

## Why aren't the most-used AI tools the top earners?

The lists show that usage and spending differ. They do not show why. They are ranks for one month, with no reasons attached.

a16z's own read is that an app's traffic rank and spending rank "can vary drastically depending on how aggressively they monetize power users". Its spending data, a16z writes, "shows how valuable AI has become to people who use it to build, create, and get work done."

**My read:** popularity and value are two different scoreboards. Chat makes AI popular. Finished work makes it valuable.

## What does this mean for me as a professional?

**My read:** using AI is no longer an edge. Free chatbots are everywhere. The edge is using AI to finish work you would otherwise pay someone to do: the deck, the video, the voice-over, the meeting notes.

That is also how I choose my own tools. I wrote up [the AI tools I actually pay for in 2026](https://hyperfocusam.com/blog/the-ai-tools-i-actually-use-2026/) and why each one stays.

## How should a company measure AI adoption?

**My read:** stop counting how many people log in to AI. Count what it helped them finish.

A login count tells you who opened the tool. It does not tell you whether a report, a training video or a set of minutes got done. When you review AI at work, ask each team what AI helped them finish this month, and look at the work itself.

## How I counted

- **Source:** [a16z, "Top 100 Consumer AI Apps - Seventh Edition"](https://www.a16z.news/p/top-100-consumer-ai-apps-seventh) by Olivia Moore, published 5 October 2026. I link to it rather than reproduce its charts.
- **Three lists, one month:** the top 50 web products by unique monthly visits (Similarweb, August 2026); the top 50 mobile apps by monthly active users (Sensor Tower, August 2026); and the top 50 consumer AI apps by monthly revenue (YipitData; observed U.S. consumer card spending, August 2026).
- **Ranks only.** I used no revenue amounts and no user counts.
- **Cross-check:** I transcribed the three lists, matched names (OpenAI = ChatGPT, Anthropic = Claude), and counted the overlaps with a script. a16z's article reports the same two headline figures: 29 of the top 50 by spend are on neither traffic list, and seven companies make all three lists.

## FAQ

### Is ChatGPT the most used AI tool in 2026?

On a16z's August 2026 lists, yes. ChatGPT is number one for mobile monthly active users and for web visits, and OpenAI is number one on the spending list.

### Which AI app makes the most money?

On a16z's spending list for August 2026, OpenAI is first, then Anthropic and Canva. That list measures observed U.S. consumer card spending, not total company revenue, and it leaves out Gemini.

### Why is Gemini not on the AI revenue list?

a16z left it out. The chart notes that Gemini's revenue could not be reliably separated from Google's broader consumer revenue. Gemini is number 3 on mobile and number 2 on the web.

### Does DeepSeek make money?

These lists cannot tell you. DeepSeek is number 5 on web visits and number 14 on mobile, and it is not in the spending top 50. That list only counts U.S. consumer card spending.

### Where does this data come from?

From a16z's seventh edition of its consumer AI rankings, published 5 October 2026. The mobile ranks come from Sensor Tower, the web ranks from Similarweb and the spending ranks from YipitData, all for August 2026.
