Hong Kong College of Technology · Staff development · AI learning community
From a whole-college talk to a monthly AI learning community.
In April 2025 I gave an AI talk to about 400 staff at HKCT’s Staff Development Day. I then proposed an “AI Learning Community”, and the college signed a 24-month agreement: a WhatsApp AI question-and-answer group plus a monthly workshop, which started in March 2026. The college invited me back to its April 2026 Staff Development Day, and the work later extended to its public “AI+” short courses.

The brief
The first talk introduced AI. The college then wanted to go further: from September 2026 every student and staff member would use NotebookLM, so AI was no longer optional but part of HKCT’s culture—for teaching staff as well as HR, marketing and administrative colleagues. It also felt that AI changes too quickly, and each person gets stuck in a different place, to fix a curriculum in advance; training should follow the problems colleagues actually meet.
The college set two directions for its staff: teaching colleagues would use AI to support self-directed learning and personalised teaching; administrative colleagues would use it to standardise processes, reduce errors and build internal knowledge resources—without uploading confidential or sensitive information.
How it was designed
- The first Staff Development Day talk, on 26 April 2025, ran 75 minutes around three starting points—AI literacy, idea generation, and visuals and writing—plus data safety, plagiarism and accuracy.
- I led the first community workshop on 27 March 2026, in person and online: practical NotebookLM techniques and when to use NotebookLM versus Copilot, with notes on a link that stays live. Later monthly workshops were run by other trainers on the same programme, on image generation, meeting notes and reports, AI presentations and AI animation.
- At the Staff Development Day on 25 April 2026, a 75-minute session for the whole college on “Integrating AI into HKCT culture”: teaching and learning, help with administrative work, AI news and safe use, and an introduction to the WhatsApp question group—followed by the college’s IT department on its NotebookLM rollout timeline.
- In July 2026 I helped the college deliver its public “AI+” short courses in a computer lab—explaining and practising side by side. The classes I taught covered presentations, AI-assisted writing and streamlining work.

- The college said the previous year’s talk was well received and colleagues wanted another session, which is why it invited me back.
- The relationship grew from one talk to ongoing staff support and public short courses. In September 2026 HKCT Institute of Higher Education appointed me a member of the Programme Validation Panel for two of its Higher Diploma programmes (QF Level 4).
Feedback
We were lucky to have such an impressive expert who is also a gifted teacher. With my 35 years of teaching experience at HKU, I think I'm qualified to say so based on your clear explanation with demonstrations, patient and willing to share as well as understands there are huge differences in pace and background among the learners. In the room

What followed
- On 17 September 2026 I ran a 90-minute online taster for the October “AI+” intake, using deck-building to teach an AI workflow.
